Laboratory Performance Indicators
IVF Laboratory Performance Benchmarks
The Vienna Consensus values for monitoring fresh IVF and ICSI cycles. Competence is the minimum level any laboratory should achieve; benchmark is the aspirational best-practice goal. Hover or tap a bar for what it means.
Competence
Minimum acceptable performance — falling below it is a signal to investigate.
Benchmark
Aspirational target a well-performing laboratory works toward.

IndicatorCompetenceBenchmark
Oocyte recovery rate Reference indicator
COCs retrieved ÷ follicles measured (stimulated cycles)
A reference indicator, not a laboratory KPI — its values are not influenced by lab practice but reflect ovarian stimulation and retrieval. Values outside the range should prompt a review of stimulation, triggering, or aspiration.
Expected range80–95%
Proportion of MII oocytes at ICSI Reference indicator
MII oocytes ÷ COCs retrieved (assessed at ICSI, 40 ± 1 h post-trigger)
A reference indicator — a proxy for the effectiveness of ovarian stimulation, not laboratory performance, since only mature (MII) oocytes can be injected.
Expected range75–90%
Sperm motility, post-preparation Performance indicator
Progressively motile spermatozoa ÷ all spermatozoa counted in final preparation (fresh normozoospermic ejaculates only)
Proportion of progressively motile sperm in the insemination preparation, for fresh normozoospermic ejaculates. A low value points to a sample or preparation problem upstream of fertilisation.

02
Fertilization · Day 1 (17 ± 1 h)
IVF normal fertilization
2PN ÷ COCs inseminated
The core read on conventional insemination. Persistently low values prompt review of sperm parameters and insemination timing.
60
75
IVF failed fertilization rate ▼ lower is better
IVF cycles with no evidence of fertilization ÷ stimulated IVF cycles (cancelled cycles excluded)
A KPI: the share of IVF cycles where nothing fertilizes. Should stay under 5%; a higher rate triggers review of sperm quality, oocyte handling, and insemination timing.
Target<5%
ICSI normal fertilization
2PN ÷ MII oocytes injected
The primary measure of injection performance. Sits above IVF because only mature, injected oocytes are in the denominator.
65
80
ICSI oocyte degeneration ▼ lower is better
Oocytes damaged ÷ oocytes injected
Lower is better. A rising rate flags injection technique, pipette quality, or unusually fragile oocytes.

03
Cleavage-stage development
Cleavage rate · Day 2
Cleaved embryos on day 2 ÷ 2PN zygotes (44 ± 1 h)
Near-universal in a healthy cohort, so it works as an early alarm — a drop usually means a culture or handling issue, not embryo quality.
95
99
Day 2 development · 4-cell
4-cell embryos on day 2 ÷ normally fertilized oocytes
Checks that development is on schedule, not merely that the embryo divided. Off-pace cohorts warrant a culture-system look.
50
80
Day 3 development · 8-cell
8-cell embryos on day 3 ÷ normally fertilized (68 ± 1 h)
On-time cleavage here tracks with blastocyst potential and is a key check on media and incubator conditions.

04
Blastocyst, biopsy & cryopreservation
Blastocyst development · Day 5
Blastocysts on day 5 ÷ normally fertilized (116 ± 2 h)
One of the most sensitive indicators of culture conditions, media lot, and incubator stability across the five-day window.
40
60
Successful biopsy rate
Biopsies with DNA detected ÷ biopsies performed
Measures biopsy and tubing technique — whether a sample amplifies — independently of what the genetic result turns out to be.
90
95
Blastocyst cryosurvival
Intact ÷ warmed (vitrification)
The headline vitrification metric. A dip points to protocol, media-lot, or operator variation in freezing or warming.

05
Transfer outcome
Implantation · cleavage stage
Gestational sacs on ultrasound ÷ embryos transferred
A shared clinical-and-lab outcome: uterine and transfer factors affect it too, so read it alongside — not instead of — the lab KPIs.
25
35
Implantation · blastocyst stage
Gestational sacs on ultrasound ÷ blastocysts transferred
Higher than cleavage stage thanks to better selection, but still shaped by patient and transfer factors beyond the laboratory.
