Laboratory Performance Indicators

IVF Laboratory Performance Benchmarks

The Vienna Consensus values for monitoring fresh IVF and ICSI cycles. Competence is the minimum level any laboratory should achieve; benchmark is the aspirational best-practice goal. Hover or tap a bar for what it means.

Competence
Minimum acceptable performance — falling below it is a signal to investigate.
Benchmark
Aspirational target a well-performing laboratory works toward.

Reference population. Values apply to fresh cycles using the patient's own oocytes and ejaculated sperm, female age under 40, with PGT cycles excluded where relevant. All figures are percentages.  Scope. The consensus defined 19 indicators in total — 12 KPIs, 5 PIs and 2 RIs. The KPIs are shown with competence and benchmark values; the two reference indicators (oocyte recovery rate and proportion of MII oocytes at ICSI) are shown as expected ranges, not competence/benchmark, because they reflect ovarian stimulation rather than laboratory practice. The 5 PIs are sperm motility post-preparation, IVF polyspermy rate, 1PN rate after IVF, 1PN rate after ICSI, and good-blastocyst-development rate; they remain useful for documentation, troubleshooting, and interpreting KPI changes. Early cleavage may help troubleshooting, but no expected value was recommended; total failed fertilization after ICSI is reported and investigated by exception. Each laboratory should set its own indicators and monitor trends over time rather than single cycles. These are quality benchmarks, not clinical guarantees.
