Revolutionizing Sperm Preparation: Introducing the SwimCount® Harvester in the U.S.

The landscape of assisted reproductive technology (ART) is continually evolving, with innovations aimed at improving outcomes for couples facing fertility challenges. A significant advancement in this field is the introduction of the SwimCount® Harvester to the U.S. market. This device offers a novel approach to sperm preparation, enhancing the quality of sperm used in procedures like In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), and Intrauterine Insemination (IUI).

Understanding the SwimCount® Harvester

Developed by MotilityCount ApS, the SwimCount® Harvester is a selective barrier membrane device designed to isolate progressive motile sperm cells (PMSCs) from semen samples. Unlike traditional methods such as Density Gradient Centrifugation (DGC) or the swim-up technique, which involve multiple steps and can subject sperm to mechanical stress, the SwimCount® Harvester employs a gentle, four-step process that mimics the natural selection occurring in the female reproductive tract. This approach not only reduces the risk of DNA fragmentation but also improves sperm morphology and vitality.

Clinical Advantages Over Traditional Methods

Clinical studies have demonstrated the efficacy of the SwimCount® Harvester in enhancing sperm quality parameters. Compared to DGC and swim-up methods, the device has shown:

  • Higher Progressive Motility: An increase to 89% compared to 75% with DGC.

  • Improved Sperm Vitality: An increase to 96% compared to 80% with DGC.

  • Reduced DNA Fragmentation: A significant decrease to 4.14% compared to 12.14% with DGC.

These improvements are crucial, as higher motility and lower DNA fragmentation are associated with better fertilization rates and embryo quality.

User-Friendly Design and Application

The SwimCount® Harvester is available in two versions:

  • 1 mL Device: Ideal for IVF and ICSI procedures.

  • 3 mL Device: Suitable for IUI, handling larger semen volumes.

Each device comprises a sample compartment, a medium/harvest compartment, and a microporous polycarbonate filter membrane. The process involves adding semen to the sample compartment and sperm separation medium to the medium compartment. After a 30-minute incubation, motile sperm cells migrate through the membrane into the medium compartment, from which they can be collected for use.

Regulatory Approval and Availability

The SwimCount® Harvester received FDA 510(k) clearance in January 2025, affirming its safety and effectiveness for clinical use in the United States.  It is now available for purchase through the IVF Store, offering fertility clinics and patients access to this innovative technology.

Conclusion

The introduction of the SwimCount® Harvester marks a significant advancement in sperm preparation techniques within the U.S. By providing a gentler, more efficient method for isolating high-quality sperm, it holds the potential to improve outcomes in ART procedures, offering new hope to couples striving to conceive.
