The lightweight, easy-to-use i-STAT 1 blood analyzer operates with the advanced technology of i-STAT test cartridges. The i-STAT 1 has some applications in laboratory QC programs.
Overview
The Abbott i-STAT 1 is a handheld blood analyzer that delivers lab-quality diagnostic results in just a few minutes using single-use test cartridges. With only 2–3 drops of whole blood per test and a broad clinical menu available on a single portable platform, it is widely used in hospitals and critical care settings for rapid decision-making at the point of care.
For IVF and andrology labs, the i-STAT System can also be considered for selected quality control applications where rapid, quantitative measurements are helpful. Any use for IVF lab QC is off-label and must be validated by the laboratory in accordance with local regulations and accreditation requirements.
Key features
- Handheld, lightweight analyzer designed for rapid patient-side blood testing using i-STAT single-use cartridges
- Broad test menu available, including blood gases, electrolytes, chemistries, lactate, cardiac markers, coagulation, hematology and endocrine assays, all on the same platform
- Only 2–3 drops of whole blood required per cartridge, helping to reduce sample volume requirements while still delivering quantitative results in about 2 minutes for most tests
- Clear on-screen prompts guide the user step by step through the testing process, helping reduce operator error in busy clinical environments
- Connectivity options to data management systems such as Abbott Info HQ or AEGISPOC, supporting integration with LIS or EMR systems for result management, operator control and device oversight
Potential uses in IVF and andrology labs
In addition to its primary intended role in human patient diagnostics, some IVF and andrology laboratories may explore use of the i-STAT System for quality control. These applications are considered off-label. IVF Store strongly recommends that any laboratory undertaking such use performs appropriate method validation, defines acceptance ranges, and confirms that their use is compliant with local regulatory bodies and accrediting organizations.
